White male here... I love John McWhorter. He is not at all woke, but like my Irish-American mother he is bulldog loyal to his own. I always admire a black person who says "aks" around me. "Yes, I know what you think, but I don't give a rip." Good for you. Supposedly the French have a hard time saying "The song" -- the combination of sounds is difficult for them. Well, I think pronouncing "asked" requires verbal gymnastics of even a native speaker. "Axed" rolls off the tongue much easier.
