Apropos of nothing; I saw Henri Matisse's "Blue Girl" at the Tate Modern and was astounded by how many rough bits of paper it's made of. Torn edges, blobs of glue, some pins sticking out.
All the photos make it smooth like a silkscreen print, but that's not even close to the raw, primitive construction techniques he used to get his vision. Really compelling.
