The biggest bang is for de-centralization or edge based storage similar idea to @josephg (personal computing). Imagine taking multiple hours provisioning your personal compute with all your data and stream the diff across your devices and having an internet that runs off your devices. This would finally allow for a multi device local-first experience (https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first/ https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first/) where your phone streams the changes to your data while you were on your flight to your desktop and at a bigger scale entire facebook/google data store is a streaming system with auto-merge instead of a focus on ACID DB structures and coherence.
Hands down Martin Kleppmann (Author of data intensive applications) is the biggest fan of CRDTs and this page has a lot of great info https://martin.kleppmann.com/2020/07/06/crdt-hard-parts-hydra.html https://martin.kleppmann.com/2020/07/06/crdt-hard-parts-hydr...
