It warns me, "Don't take that job, don't trust that person, you should go over here" very subtly and I have learned that if I ignore it, I will usually regret it. I once wrote a literature review about this as a homework assignment to get some scientific understanding of it [1]. I've used the science to great effect myself (knowing when to trust it and when it would lead me astray). I'm pretty sure that the book Thinking Fast and Slow from Kahneman also has a lot in there since I used part of his academic work in my literature review.
