New Nvidia Open-Source Linux Kernel Graphics Driver Appears
- sph 5y ago"New driver appears" but it's the Tegra driver that has been open source for ages. Slow news days for Phoronix apparently.
- bpye 5y agoSupposedly this is more than the existing Tegra driver - see https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1512455039914319881 https://twitter.com/never_released/status/151245503991431988... , https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1512307556483584002 https://twitter.com/never_released/status/151230755648358400... and https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1512321522005913600 https://twitter.com/never_released/status/151232152200591360...
- chris37879 5y agoIt's not, though. It's a new driver that contains at least some code whose copyright is from the early 90s, and it also contains a bunch of references to modern desktop GPUs as well. It seems more like it's code from Nvidia's own driver than the existing Tegra driver since the code base changed so much.
- sph 5y agoThe reference to their modern GPUs might be a red herring, i.e. autogenerated code from their database of PCI IDs, even if not fully relevant to this particular driver. Nowhere this shows that this is the actual driver for current consumer GPUs, which is what people want to see open sourced. If it's something else, nobody cares really.
