I have no idea why anyone would hang around at an employer like Better.com.

  Because some people live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to look for a new job, and even if they can do so for a few weeks it comes with extreme stress, because if you can't find a job then you may need to deal with some form of homelessness.

    Stress from court ordered child support payments encourages people to never be without a paycheck because child support enforcement can suspend driver license for missing payments.

      Not to mention some people work in the US on a visa (H1B, J1 or similar) and changing jobs can be months long uphill battle against bureucracy and your current employer's lawyers. Of course, if you fail you're forced to vacate a country you built your life in.
