What you're saying really can be summed up in that last paragraph; we've invested a lot into car-centric infrastructure amd it'll take time, effort, and sacrifices in the short-term to build something new. I don't blame people for driving, when the alternatives suck. We need to push to make those alternatives better. It's a chicken and egg problem.
