Chemical industry is still huge in the West (BASF - currently the largest chemical company in the world - for example has the largest contained chemical production site in the world in Ludwigshafen; with smaller sites in Antwerpen and some in the US). The two largest high-purity silicon producers produce their product in the US (REC) and Germany (Wacker). There are still many trailing-node semiconductor fabs left (Global Foundries, ST, NXP, TI, etc.).
