From different perspective I was trying Linux every few years in last 2 decades only to surrender it's unusable and gave up trying few years ago. Btw. on my work laptop I keep Windows 10, I refreshed wife's laptop and deliberately chose W8.1 (instead W10/11) and not even gonna upgrade to W10, I dont see any benefit, I even think in hindsight I should go with W7 for the best performance, that was peak Windows, W10 is still somewhat usable, but from what I read about W11 I am for sure skipping that version and I see no benefits in my daily usage since W7, they are actually making my user experience with each version worse. I like the idea of switching away from Windows, but sadly app I need for work (golden standard in my field) is not available on Linux and everything else is vastly inferior and not gonna run this power hungry app through WINE if it even worked. Btw. my Win never restarts itself or automatically installs anything without my approval, seems like OP didn't do basic search to configure system properly.
