Apple had a head start with M1 but they’re falling behind in Single Core perf
Apple turned the industry upside down with the M1 at the end of 2020 but we’re almost halfway through 2022 and the new M1 Ultra has the same single core performance as the M1 from 2020.
The flagship Intel Alder Lake is already +20% faster than the M1 Ultra in single core. The M2 comes out at the end of this year at the earliest and it will be based on the A15 architecture from iPhone 13, which was 10% faster in single core over the A14, which the M1 is based on.
Do you guys think Apple is in trouble when Intel gets their stuff together and makes their chips more efficient?
- navjack27 5y agoLeapfrogging over and over. Actual competition. It's going to be exciting for a bit again.
- daviddever23box 5y agoDoesn’t matter when your laptop is out of juice.
- frumper 5y agoApple isn't likely to stop using their own chips just because Intel ones get better. While some consumers may choose Apple devices for performance reasons, a large portion of them buy Apple products for the software and ecosystem. Apple also doesn't need to be the best to make a cool graph that shows how good Apple products are compared to something like competitors flagship chips.

- jstx1 5y agoApple aren't in their current market position because their chips are a bit better so I don't think that their chips being a bit worse is a big deal.
- wmf 5y agoWe don't know that M2 will be based on A15. M2 could be based on A16 which we know nothing about. I wouldn't be surprised if M2, Raptor Lake, and Zen 4 are very closely matched. Very few people are going make buying decisions based on +/- 10% differences.
