You're seriously replying to me at "-1" with a quote from The Guardian's about page? This is hilarious.
- rntn 5y agoThe Guardian's about page seems very appropriate here, if you feel it is not, please do enlighten me as to exactly how you think the Guardian article I posted is "part of a wave of amplification of Western propaganda", as you assert. Not sure what you mean by 'at "-1"', here, but, if you're implying that I downvoted your comment, this may help : "Why don't I see down arrows? There are no down arrows on stories. They appear on comments after users reach a certain karma threshold, but never on direct replies." https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html

But when I am at negative points and this is the only refute (an about us page from a publication), it's really not in my interest to engage in any further conversation. Not sure how to put this lightly, but it's bollox. > The Guardian's about page seems very appropriate here, if you feel it is not, please do enlighten me as to exactly how you think the Guardian article I posted is "part of a wave of amplification of Western propaganda", as you assert. I do believe that quoting a publication's about us page as to how they are some beacon of journalism is in bad faith. It's like quoting Google's "Don't be evil" before they removed it and calling it a day. Just lazy and truly not in the interest of discourse. Just as an exercise, consider this my disclaimer: I am a totally unbiased source of ideas. I am 100% not interested in taking political sides and everything I write is just the truth and nothing else but it. I've traveled across the globe talking to people at face level about important events and thus have great context about what I am talking. Furthermore, if you think a "Taiwan-based cyber monitoring group" has no interest in painting China in a certain light, you are perhaps even more delusional than I initially anticipated.
- rntn 5y agoThanks for your reply. I am still curious if you have any actual reasoning behind your assertion that the article we are discussing is "part of a wave of amplification of Western propaganda"..? If you are interested in counter assertions regarding the veracity of the Guardian as a journalistic source, I will be happy to provide you with them; my reference to their about page is not at all in "bad faith" as you charge.. Also curious as to what exactly is the exercise you are suggesting regarding your "personal disclaimer"..? Not sure why you are accusing me of being unaware of the potential bias of sources that are within the Guardian article we are ostensibly discussing here, nor do I see how you conclude that this justified your accusation that I am "even more delusional than I initially anticipated.", but I work with sources in Japan, China and Taiwan and am comfortable with material in all relevant languages, so I am happy to discuss the issues pertaining to the disinformation campaigns waged by China against Taiwan and the geopolitics of the region if you like.. As to the your situations "when I am at negative points", this might be a good place to start : "In Comments Be kind. Don't be snarky. Have curious conversation; don't cross-examine. Please don't fulminate. Please don't sneer, including at the rest of the community. Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive. When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3." Please respond to the strongest plausible interpretation of what someone says, not a weaker one that's easier to criticize. Assume good faith. Eschew flamebait. Avoid unrelated controversies and generic tangents. Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something. Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. It tramples curiosity. Please don't comment on whether someone read an article. "Did you even read the article? It mentions that" can be shortened to "The article mentions that." Please don't pick the most provocative thing in an article or post to complain about in the thread. Find something interesting to respond to instead." https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- ThalesX 5y agoThanks for your reply. My main point is that we are a tech / start-up community, and we should strive to keep it that way, by keeping propaganda (in this case western) out of it as much as possible. > Ironically how we're getting this as part of a wave of amplification of Western propaganda... my God we really need to stop peddling propaganda, especially on a somewhat tech related forum. > You're seriously replying to me at "-1" with a quote from The Guardian's about page? This is hilarious. You dance around the issue I underlined and hammer away at my -1 comment, which of course is me leaving on the table an easy thing to attack. Giving me the rules of Hacker News is again a tiring way to continue this conversation, as if I am not aware of the rules. Your comment's bulk is a copy paste from the sidebar basically. Low effort. Again. This being said, and continuing down the road, even though I am getting signals that my contribution is not up to spec (which is what my negative rating comment was hinting at), I will continue with this final reply. > I am still curious if you have any actual reasoning behind your assertion that the article we are discussing is "part of a wave of amplification of Western propaganda"..? https://imgur.com/a/hPDUX5s https://imgur.com/a/hPDUX5s - this is a plot of posts to this forum containing the word "Russia" (https://hn.algolia.com/api/v1/search?query=Russia&tags=story&hitsPerPage=1000&page=0 https://hn.algolia.com/api/v1/search?query=Russia&tags=story...). Maybe you're also interested in the one with "Russia+China": https://imgur.com/a/wELwfLL https://imgur.com/a/wELwfLL I don't think I need to add more to this as to why I believe there's a 'wave' of western propaganda that is touching this forum. > If you are interested in counter assertions regarding the veracity of the Guardian as a journalistic source, I will be happy to provide you with them; my reference to their about page is not at all in "bad faith" as you charge.. I am very much not interested in continuing this discussion. You can replace The Guardian with <publication> and my initial comment still stands, "a quote from <publication>'s about page? This is hilarious". Do you think Russian media outlets have about pages where they mention the (mis/dis)-information they are peddling? Hilarious. > Also curious as to what exactly is the exercise you are suggesting regarding your "personal disclaimer"..? As above, the fact that <entity> writing about <entity> and using that as an argument is... hilarious. > Not sure why you are accusing me of being unaware of the potential bias of sources that are within the Guardian article we are ostensibly discussing here, I am not accusing you of such a thing. I am accusing you of bringing in propaganda to this tech forum. Willingly or not. I don't know, nor care. > nor do I see how you conclude that this justified your accusation that I am "even more delusional than I initially anticipated.", It's because you don't understand that I am not attacking <publication> > but I work with sources in Japan, China and Taiwan and am comfortable with material in all relevant languages, so I am happy to discuss the issues pertaining to the disinformation campaigns waged by China against Taiwan and the geopolitics of the region if you like.. This is exactly my point. I am not interested, on this particular forum, in discussions that go below 'evidence of some interesting new phenomenon'. In this current context, I don't care about your obviously western geopolitical stance, your sources and how many languages you are comfortable with. I care about not bringing this kind of propaganda to the forum. ---- > https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html > Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic. > Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. > Off-Topic: Most stories about politics
