In the mid 1990s I was at a military research lab doing VR research. SGIs all around, working quite well. The indy on my desk worked well as a workstation, and the larger machines (High/Max impacts, Indigo2s I think) blew me away with their hardware-accelerated GL (IrisGL, still, I think) apps. They worked very well for what we bought them for, and I was sad to see the company get eaten away by competition that had much, much, much cheaper solutions to the same problems, but none of the pizazz or desktop UI. Intergraph on NT, mostly.
