There’s Nothing Wrong with Signaling
- hprotagonist 5y agoWhat’s wrong with signaling is basically that when Goodhart’s law takes over, cynicism reigns and it’s a downward spiral. And if everything becomes framed as about signaling, that’s what happens. If you do X so that you can flex about how Y you are to your audience, that’s bullshit. If you, as an audience member, automatically assume all X-doers to be primarily interested in telling you about Y they are, that is also bullshit. If you do X because X, and if you see people doing X and assume X until it’s obvious that there is more going on, that’s a lot more healthy.
