One of my favorite memories of NYC. I was late catching my train at Penn Station. I was only two or three long blocks away, but dragging a heavy suitcase, and my timely arrival was uncertain. Traffic was decent and a taxi was right nearby, so I hailed, got in, and explained the situation. "I'll get you there", the driver said.
Then to my dismay, I realized I only had $2 cash in my wallet. "Shit. Let me out. I only have $2. I'm so sorry."
He looked back at me and said solemnly, "You're late, you're broke, and you're not that good looking." Then he turned off his meter, took what money I had, and drove me the rest of the way. I made my train with time to spare, thanks to him.
