I also haven't owned a desktop in about 15 years but recently built one to replace my laptop. I specifically chose parts that had the most upgradability potential over time and while I'm at the beginning of this journey I'm pretty happy with my choice. I'm sort of thinking about only using a laptop as a commodity dumb terminal at this point. Crucially it gives me an exist to tinker again and that's why I got into computers in the first place.
