Ask HN: Why are accounts created over Tor instantly shadow-banned?
I make a new account to make anonymous comments on here and only I can ever see them. Why does this community shadow ban and prevent anonymous posts?
- PaulHoule 5y agoBack in the day when I wanted to make trouble I made trouble using Tor. Wikipedia makes you log in with an account if you try to edit using Tor, many sites do things like that.
- throway3 5y ago> Back in the day when I wanted to make trouble I made trouble using Tor. Okay? How is that relevant to the question? People make trouble even without Tor - and my intention and posts were not troublesome or even controversial in nature. There's not even an opportunity to see what they are since they're instant-shadow-banned. > Wikipedia makes you log in with an account if you try to edit using Tor, many sites do things like that. So does this site ... so what is your point?
- PaulHoule 5y agoStatistically the odds are worse that a Tor user is a troublemaker than a non-Tor user. It's true that some Tor users are great people who will add to the community. Realistically though, a community like HN has to be moderated on a statistical basis. It can't afford to moderate every single user and post on an individual basis.

- tlb 5y agoThey're a major source of spam and abuse if left unchecked. If you make constructive comments with such a new account, they're likely to be noticed and vouched. (See https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html and search for 'vouch'.)
