I don't know about recently, but historically, "idevicepair" or whatever it's called on the Linux box, and then the iPhone photos come down quickly and reliably. Android is OK these days, but used to be really dodgy to download via USB cable. But recently I just use a wifi file server app. "Sweech" on Android. A couple of taps and I can download the newest stuff as a zip file via web browser.
