Agreed. I might add that for many people, the sunk cost fallacy, rather like the gambler's ruin, makes it very difficult for them to accept their losses and shut things down. Just one more night hacking, another SEO trick, one more HN post, etc. Hoping, hoping that things will turn around ... except in many cases they don't.
