Part of me suspects because there's no obvious answer, there are no good answers and until technology improves, everything is effectively a compromise. In some sense, you're trying to build a more meaningful Google, albeit at a much smaller scale. I will say it wasn't intentional, but Kindle highlights have been unexpectedly useful for giving me a "feel" for what a book is about and reminding me about important insights I may have forgotten. I use Roam Research daily as a journal, but I don't find it useful for retrieving information, maybe because I can't explicitly predict the structures I'll need ahead of time.
