Currently, the Texas grid [1] averages 24.8% wind generation v. 51.0% natural gas during 2021 operations. However, although wind is somewhat fickle, diurnal patterns still make the 3-4AM hour a good bet for the strongest and highest wind-driven megawatts (MW) on the grid. Coincidentally, demand is at rock bottom then -- as much of electricity consumption, in Texas, is air-conditioner driven.
March, more than any other month, has highest winds, as well as generally low demands on the grid. For those inclined to set their cars to charge on a schedule, the peak in wind MW versus demand flips the ratio, so that, for example, these last 30 days, wind was 50.3% of the demand on the Texas grid, on average, at 4AM. Add to that, the 5,000 MW constant base-load from the four nuclear reactors, and some 64% of energy on the grid came from sources that burned no fossil fuels.
Now this is for March -- the perfect alignment of winds and loads. However, the Texas grid isn't a static thing. Wait 2-4 years, and these ratios (50%+ wind) will become more commonplace in months other than March, on account of the rapid deployment of wind farms in the Texas panhandle and coast. So, fast-forward 5-10 years, and the calculations in this article are overly conservative, at least for Texas, and other states [2], that are rapidly deploying wind, and other renewables.
So, the one metric, that the WSJ fails to account, is that many drivers are already seeking the charge times (particularly in night-heavy-renewable Texas) that are vastly superior in CO2 emissions than the average for the state, or for the nation.
