Artificial pancreas to revolutionise diabetes care in England
- jfengel 5y agoA friend uses a closed-loop system. The pump looks similar, though it's a bit hard to say since it's just a black rectangle. She has to apply an external glucose sensor; having an implant would be great. (The external one is painful to apply and catches on things.) It was a huge improvement. It's not really an artificial pancreas, but it's perhaps 80% of the way there. It requires much less monitoring and mental overhead. The biggest complaint she has is having to move the input port every week or so. Not only is it unpleasant, but the wounds take a while to heal. (That's a side effect of being diabetic.) If they could find a better way to get the insulin in (perhaps an implanted port?), it would be another huge advance.
