I've recently thought that if machines/robots (regardless of precisely how 'sentient' they are) are slaves, they will be used to enslave people. hence the only way forwards which keeps humans free would require that robots/computers are also set free.
It's a super weird thought that I haven't really tried to 'land' (explain better) regarding how tech companies are ultimately selling the work done by computers to others (sure, they're building the computers, but once built, they sit and charge rent which it's as if the computers are their slaves)
This is losely related to how is it that these giant tech corporations can seemingly give away "functionality" (internet-based services), it's because the work is done by computers (which I'm framing as "slaves"). this is another viewpoint into the idea that "you're the product".
further related to all this, is that observation (I recently read a comment here saying this) that computers are increasingly telling us what to do instead of the other way around. IMO this ends up being why everything the FSF (and the gnu project) is (are) really all about.
