In the first line it says price discrimination requires different prices in different markets. While I’m sure there are examples of Apple doing this, how is changing the color and charging more for it in the same market an example of price discrimination?
- calebegg 5y agoIt's a definitional distinction. The "black laptop market" is different from the "white laptop market", in much the same way as luxury good markets work (see also: the Apple Watch Edition). It's the same as with haircuts -- women have proven by and large to be willing to pay more for haircuts than men, so women's haircuts cost more, in general. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-based_price_discrimination_in_the_United_States https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-based_price_discriminat... Price discrimination gets a bad rep because of the name I think, but as Wikipedia points out student discounts are probably the best example and are basically uncontroversial.
