There is nothing that made me less interested in community work than the idea I was doing it for any reason other than just being helpful. I spent a lot of time doing service projects with my two brother's scout troops. I loved cleaning up trash, restoring museums, re-painting fire hydrants, removing invasive castor bean, building park benches and fire pits, and most of all was just helping people who needed a hand moving or something.
All of those things were awesome, but once it started becoming something like a fund raiser for some corrupt charity, or working on floats for the Rose Parade it became just another lame job. Doing community service for a resume strikes me as disgusting. I would hate every second. It taints the main reason I'm doing it. To feel like I'm a member of a community. Not just a cog in a machine.
