I get a feeling that the news feed was never really what social people wanted. And when they included stories, there was even less reason to post to the news feed. I think the most social value of Facebook is in groups. There are some amazing groups where people self-organize, share knowledge and generally help each other. The public FB is mostly about media companies sharing stuff, but groups is where people are actually involved and that part is very much alive.
