Putting aside the visions you have. What are you more competent with: 2D drawing / painting or 3D modelling? In my limited experience, 3D modelling takes a great deal more work than 2D painting. Given a simple scene/image (e.g. from a photo), how are you able to render it more accurately? with less effort? When I look at the works by preeminent sci-fi artists, I'm blown away by the level of detail of their work. I'm sure that it takes them considerable time and effort to create those works. So either way, I'd think you will need to accept that you need to practice a great deal with your preferred methods and techniques.
