Before COVID, I managed to find three after combing through local Meetup and Eventbrite: the SF Rust group (I remember a session with Tokio contributors where I ate a lot of delicious, free balsamic & fig pizza), the Peninsula Rust group (I went to a session at the Intel offices in Santa Clara that had much less exciting food and a lot more Intel marketing). Oh, and there was a drop-in informal Rust meetup in downtown Mountain View, at the cafe where I'm sitting right now.
There wasn't a lot to start with (the official groups averaged less than one event per quarter). And it's all gone now. Where's the excitement? Western Europe? Seattle?
- steveklabnik 5y agoI moved away from the Bay Area years ago, but the main meetup (hosted at Mozilla and then Cloudflare) was monthly, and always filled the full space fast. As for conferences, in 2019 and 2020 there were about ten a year worldwide. I’m not sure what your expectation of volume is, but again, given that we’re strictly talking in-person here and there’s been, you know, a global pandemic for two years, it’s not exactly like in-person events have been flourishing.
- legerdemain 5y agoWhy strictly in person? The local Bay Area meetups for tech topics like Python, data science, and web dev have all moved online. They have regular presentations, online socials and career networking events, paper-reading groups, the whole nine yards. By comparison, Rust Bay Area held one "virtual event" in the last two years, and a tentative feeler from the group organizer about presentation pitches went unanswered.

- legerdemain 5y agoFrankly, I'd be thrilled with anything more substantive and less impersonal than a sub-Reddit or a Discord server.
