Tulare lake was the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi. It’s now 100% dry, and farmed.
Started in the 1870s when water was diverted from the rivers feeding it to irrigate.
The last straw seemed to be the damming of the Kaweah river.
It used to occasionally flood and become a lake again. Now it’s all farmland.
