I Schizopost: What Schizoposting Is
- homonculus1 5y agoThis post sucks
- correancollar 5y ago:(
- homonculus1 5y agoSorry :(
- BLKNSLVR 5y agoThis is meta-schizoposting: It's a schizopost about schizoposting. As an article, it's exactly what it's trying to be, therefore as a piece of art, it's... subjective, but appears to have achieved the author's goal.
- correancollar 5y agoi'm not appearing to schizopost about schizoposting. the only goal was to outline and illustrate schizoposting.
- drewcoo 5y agoI was remarking tonight on schitzo-founders and how we couldn't find a way to separate them from founders.
- voldacar 5y agoThis is not even remotely schizoposting
- eternityforest 5y agoIt's like neo beatnik philosophy or something
- LinAGKar 5y agoW̶h̶a̶t̶ Why does that site make you drag the text when you try to highlight it?
- Gys 5y agoMaybe just search for exact that question: https://kagi.com/search?q=What+does+that+site+make+you+drag+the+text+when+you+try+to+highlight+it%3F https://kagi.com/search?q=What+does+that+site+make+you+drag+...
- LinAGKar 5y agoThat login page tells me nothing. Nor does a Google search for that matter.
- Gys 5y agoVery interesting. I switched to Kagi yesterday: it is a alternative search engine, sorry I forgot it needs registration. Using the exact same search (your original question) in Google does not give any relevant result at all on the first page. But the very first result on Kagi is already very relevant: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5429827/how-can-i-prevent-text-element-selection-with-cursor-drag https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5429827/how-can-i-preven... Kagi is clearly much better than Google in this case! (You changed your question to 'Why ...' from 'What ...' originally)
- LinAGKar 5y agoYes, sorry, I meant "why". Quite an annoyance for those of us who idly highlight stuff while reading. I hadn't heard of Kagi. I haven't found meta search engines like Duckduckgo to give me as good results as Google (or as Startpage, which just uses Google). Is Kagi better in that regard? Looks like it requires an invite though, and will eventually be paid.
- Gys 5y agoI only switched to Kagi yesterday. So far so good, this search was a very good example. I also tried DDG for a while but for me Google worked better. Kagi is not a meta one, I believe, but I do not know much more. Yes, I got an invite some days ago. Maybe because I signed up for it a while ago, but I do not remember. I do not mind paying for a search engine that actually works. I value my time. Google nowadays reminds me of Altavista back in the day. Lots of results but mostly irrelevant.
- egberts1 5y agoFor just 10 cents a day, you can send a lobster away on a cosmic trip.
- Zababa 5y agoSmall data point: on some parts of 4chan, calling people schizos is basically the new way to call out some trolls/haters that rely on wild theories and stuff like that. Considering there are multiple archives, it's probably easy to retrace the origins of the terms and their usage. The article engages in wild speculations, so I'll do the same here: I think part of the idea is removing the intention in other people. Trolls choose to be trolls, people suffering from schizophrenia don't choose this. Outside of that, it's the classic "framing people a certain way to dismiss what they say instead of replying to the arguments", which is already what's done when calling someone a troll. Another way the schizo stuff/aesthetic manifests itself is through memes. There's the trollge, the "I hate the antichrist" stuff, and now you can see some of the influence in the sigma/incel memes. I always wonder if people are studying this seriously, and if it's worth studying seriously. Does this stuff has any influence? Does this have any meaning? Is there a precise origin that tells a lot about society or people? Or is it just because it's funny?
- phendrenad2 5y agoSo... people imitate the posting patterns of legitimately afflicted by schizophrenia people? To defend themselves against capitalism? Wait, did I just fall for one such post?
- bckr 5y agoI don't think you've exactly fallen for one such post, although, it's hard to say. However, I think that if you were to look for it, you'd find a lot of this stuff. Psychedelic culture, anarchist culture, etc are heavily wound up in this kind of dis-communication. It's culture jamming. If you're confused by it, that's the point. Is it effective? Could it possibly accomplish anything?. Probably not, except that it makes the writers feel more free.
- woodruffw 5y agoI was going to post a response to this arguing that it isn't really culture jamming, but I'm not 100% sure. A great deal of 4chan "schizoposting" reads (to me) like normal shitposting mixed with with the "chaotic energy" of actual sufferers of schizophrenia, like Terry Davis. There's also an incel/"NPC" element, where people suffering from extreme isolation de-realize the others around them to rationalize their perceived harms. Mixed together, it's less "dis-communication" or culture jamming and more a confused complex of digital alienation. But maybe that's just alienation under capitalism, and brings us right back to culture jamming.

- kafkaIncarnate 5y ago> So when people come up with labels like 'schizopost' or 'word salad' "word salad" is not a label made up by dumb people, it's generally a alternate term for schizophasia. It's also a very old term. Whether dumb people repurposed it or not is another question. Speaking from personal experience, word salad is generally not controllable and not a pleasant thing that you would "want" to use to express yourself, you generally want to stop and regain control of yourself but simply can't or have already given up hope of regaining control over your speech patterns. It's generally not very pleasant and despair inducing, and you get very lost and fall into a, well, kafka-esque nightmare (/me looks at my name). https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/schizophrenia/symptoms-causes/syc-20354443 https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/schizophrenia... > Disorganized thinking (speech). Disorganized thinking is inferred from disorganized speech. Effective communication can be impaired, and answers to questions may be partially or completely unrelated. Rarely, speech may include putting together meaningless words that can't be understood, sometimes known as word salad. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2950318/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2950318/ > In very severe cases, positive thought disorder manifests as unintelligible speech in which neither the individual words nor the sentences being strung together seem to correspond to any discernable overall meaning – ‘word salad’ or schizophasia, e.g. “Oh, it [life in a hospital] was superb, you know, the trains broke, and the pond fell in the front doorway” (McKenna & Oh 2005), or “They’re destroying too many cattle and oil just to make soap. If we need soap when you can jump into a pool of water, and then when you go to buy your gasoline, my folks always thought they should, get pop but the best thing to get, is motor oil, and, money. May may as well go there and, trade in some, pop caps and, uh, tires, and tractors to grup, car garages, so they can pull cars away from wrecks, is what I believe in. So I didn’t go there to get no more pop when my folks said it. I just went there to get a ice-cream cone, and some pop, in cans, or we can go over there to get a cigarette” (Andreasen 1986).
- tux3 5y agoI was not familiar with the term. Apparently, there is a subreddit: https://reddit.com/r/schizopostingmemes/comments/qy0ch6/ https://reddit.com/r/schizopostingmemes/comments/qy0ch6/
- throwmeariver1 5y agoI am fairly sure that pretending to have a mental illness is a sign of having a mental illness.
- bckr 5y agoDepends a lot on the context. Is an actor who plays a mentally ill person therefore mentally ill? Also, there are many kinds of mental illness. Perhaps a person who is depressed and anxious pretends to be a person who cannot think coherently.
- throwmeariver1 5y agoOf course it’s meant in the context of the op…
- eek2121 5y agoThe author is reading a script. In the second sentence, you proved his point. Also, as someone who had depression at one point and has an anxiety disorder that is medically treated, but not cured, yes, people with anxiety disorders cannot think coherently. One of the many symptoms of panic includes the inability to use your brain. Think dear in the headlights type stuff. Anxiety disorders are a part of much of the world, FYI, so people with an anxiety order aren't rare by any means.
- bckr 5y ago> In the second sentence, you proved his point. I'm not sure how I did that. > FYI pops a pill Indeed

- sjmm1989 5y agoSchizopost: A made up term for insecure laymen who cannot comprehend that sentences and paragraphs can have multiple methods of being written, whilst still being completely comprehendible to people other than themselves. Synonyms: Word Salad. Antonyms: N/A, yet. Give it time, these idiots will come up with something.
- iratewizard 5y agoYou don't understand what schizoposting is. It's not whatever pseudointellectual gibberish you wrote up top. It's a drawing of a crazed gunman aiming at children getting off a bus, but calling the children gangstalkers and the school bus a surveillance van. It's a mix of sardonic and absurd humor.
- kingcharles 5y agoBasically this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gangstalking/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Gangstalking/
- iratewizard 5y agoYes but ironically
- von_lohengramm 5y agoThis thread really shows that a lot of HN just really do not understand people unlike them.
- correancollar 5y agoyeahh tech-bros can suck. i'm not offended that people don't like my stuf tho. shout out you homie
- FooBarBizBazz 5y agoWhat? Half of what happens on HN is schizoposting.
- paulpauper 5y agoThere is a saying about writing, you are allowed to break the rules provided your errors are consistent. Randomly messing up there and their just makes you look stupid.

- charcircuit 5y agoA simple example of schizoposters are the people who think proprietary software is the devil, and is spying on them, and has backdoors, etc. They have a twisted, warped view of reality.
- JetAlone 5y agoHaptic gnostic charismaniac glossolalia.
