Island: Browser you've never heard of is now worth a billion dollars
- tcbawo 5y agoMaybe they have a billion dollar enterprise sales team.
- incomingpain 5y agoI doubt you are worth a billion $ if nobody has heard of you. >Island exited stealth mode in early February, but has already achieved unicorn status courtesy of a $115 million Series B funding round that valued the company at $1.3 billion. I guess they are worth a billion $. Great success to them. If anything they are filling a hole that seems wide open. Mozilla collapsed due a decade of USA political activism. We are kind of left with a big hole where the only player in game is chrome and their derivatives. I kind of consider though. Librewolf or Brave? Brave must be worth closer to a trillion $?
- netizen-936824 5y agoSadly its based on chromium >It’s built on Chromium - the same open source project that powers Chrome, https://www.island.io/ https://www.island.io/
- incomingpain 5y agoI think this is an indictment not of venture capitalism or valuation process. Those people put their money where their mouth it. But rather how worthless the USD is about to become.
- aaaaaaaaata 5y ago"Sadly" it's using the most secure browser engine available?
- netizen-936824 5y agoYes sadly, I'm specifically responding to someone who mentioned the browser monoculture: >We are kind of left with a big hole where the only player in game is chrome and their derivatives. This is just more of the same, sadly it is not a new engine
- Shadonototra 5y agoNice, they figured how to play the ycombinator game, own VC funding, pump company, over estimate it, and dump it for a juicy profit
