I don't think regarding the allegations as real is the simplest explanation when there are many other facts that are hard to reconcile with that hypothesis. There's an obviously simpler explanation. If you're ruled by the criteria "my default hypothesis is the simplest explanation" in this case you should be defending the allegations are most probably unfounded.
