Exxon is mining Bitcoin in North Dakota as part of its plan to slash emissions
- washedup 5y agoTLDR: A big part of oil company emissions comes from burning off gas at the tail end of production (“flare” gas). The article says that their pilot program to use this gas for mining, which is adaptive (can turn on or off quickly as needed), helped them cut emissions from such flaring at their testing locations by 63%, and turning it into Bitcoin, helping them reach their 2030 goal of zero-emissions from flaring.
- _aavaa_ 5y agoDoesn’t turning the gas into mining also involve burning it??

- pcdoodle 5y agoThis is cool.
- jtsiskin 5y agoTaxes on methane emissions should have done this

- SahAssar 5y agoIf they already turned the flare gas into electricity is there anything stopping them from using it for more productive things than PoW?
