The 5ESS Telephone Switch
- icedchai 5y agoNeat stuff. I enjoyed the description of ISDN as the future of telecommunications. Around here, it was almost impossible to get ISDN. I didn't know a single household who had it, though I worked for an ISP that had 2 ISDN business subscribers in the late 90's. I remember driving out to connect one of them up with an Ascend Pipeline router.
- jdkee 5y agoI got a 128kbs ISDN line to my apartment in Chicago in 1994 from Ameritech. Was blazingly fast compared to ye old dialup 33.6 modem. It was quite an exciting time as the Internet was taking off.
- icedchai 5y agoNeat! I actually knew one guy in college that had ISDN at his apartment, now that I think of it. This was in NYNEX territory. He ran it as 2x 56k digital voice channels to avoid data charges, from what I was told.
- Aloha 5y agoI think the ISDN is a thing required an integrated company to deploy.
- kjs3 5y agoI had a 128k ISDN link through the 90s from BellSouth. It was a bit of a bureaucratic slog to get it installed in a residential location. It was also pretty expensive; fortunately I had a stable of clients that justified the cost. For a relatively brief period of time, it was pretty great tech.
