EU continues to demonstrate willful and wild delusion regarding technology. “Big Tech” and “Ad Tech” need reigning in, for sure, but the EU seems intent upon finding the worst possible means of understanding a problem then mandating the worst possible solutions to their misunderstandings. They’re somehow even worse than the USA’s legal/judicial systems in this respect. Insane.

- dmitriid 5y agoHN: all these closed silos are bad, they should be open EU: mandates that at least a part of the silos such as messaging should be open HN: no, not like that
- cgearhart 5y agoIt’s much easier to understand when you recognize that practically none of the big tech companies are European, and their own tax laws have been weaponized by member states to allow foreign companies to extract capital while paying little in taxes. What they’d like is for more European companies to have a better chance in the market, but they can’t compete without regulatory assistance. It actually doesn’t matter whether GDPR, messenger interoperability, standardized charger plugs, open payment processing, etc. have the stated benefits for consumers because they have the intended benefit for government.
