The reason the Magic Mouse charges upside down
- ncmncm 5y agoIt seems pretty clear to me that they want you to buy another one to use while it charges. It is not generally very hard to understand Apple's choices when you consider their true goals. Harder to understand are apologists whose benefit is clearly not numbered among those goals.
- bencummins 5y agoI appreciate the effort the guy went to to try and get it to charge while using it - however it doesn’t really give the reason why the mouse charges upside down. It answers “why can’t I force the mouse to charge while using it”. We still don’t know why apple chose to build this way - my guess would just be form over function. I’m not sure if I’m alone, but I normally get an alert from the Mac when there’s only about 2% remaining on the mouse battery - would love to find a way to get an earlier notification
- techdragon 5y agoIt’s simple actually, this is one of Ive’s design obscenities. To make room for a lightning plug at the top of the mouse you would have to change the “perfect” symmetrical shape of the mouse. Disabling it when upside down is just a good way to avoid accidental input while upside down or balanced on its side from annoying the user. All of it simply stems from the “design first” hardware design ethos of Apple under Ive’s reign as head of design.
- bradknowles 5y agoThe previous edition of the Magic Mouse had a replaceable battery pack. You could get a replacement that charged wirelessly on a pad that plugged in via micro-USB. I had one. It worked quite well. Apple should have just sherlocked that solution.
