Some past Science News coverage was racist and sexist. We're deeply sorry
- jfengel 5y agoThat's a pretty good apology. It is very clear and specific about its mistakes, though they're only willing to go up to the 1960s. I'd bet that it didn't end there. They seem to be taking specific, concrete action going forward. Training existing staff isn't worth much, but making sure that future hires cover blind spots is. I do find it puzzling that the "Science News Reckoning Team" is entirely female. It does sound a bit like the common practice of dumping emotional labor on women. Were they at least paid for their time in coming up with this, or did they look for volunteers to do the work for free?

- JakeAl 5y agoThis is bollocks. Eugenics is simply controlled or selective breeding. It's like GMO, an overly stigmatized word that few know the actual meaning of. It's not all about pure-breeding humans and traits like an Aryan master race or franken-foods. Sure there are people labelled eugenicists who were racists or whatever that did that but their characterization of the word in this apology is something I hope they apologize for one day. Genetic engineers, gene therapists, and genetic counselors-- eugenicists-- interested in improving the quality of life for people would appreciate it.
