I can't comment about the availability of cheap cameras, but I'd caution you if you're going that way (particularly if you want to shoot at less than ideal situations). The contrast autofocus most of them use is finicky at best, and I don't think you'll get phase detection AF in a cheap cam. However a 2nd hand DSLR might be a much better idea. Even though you're not in favor of the idea, a phone camera of a mid-high end phone likely will be much better (especially with its computational chops) than a cheap point and shoot, especially if you already have a fancy $$$ phone.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't be looking for (or expecting, or putting the time and effort in to learning how to take) great shots, just nice holiday snaps etc. to look back on. I'm against going full DSLR just because it's too far the other way, not at all compact, ideally I'd like something that can squeeze into a pocket; definitely a small bag pocket. I actually already have a Canon SX40 which I suppose is technically a 'compact point-and-shoot', but even that's too big, I never use it, I'm not even sure I'd bother with it on a 'big' trip. > mid-high end phone likely will be much better (especially with its computational chops) than a cheap point and shoot, especially if you already have a fancy $$$ phone.   I suppose you could get a standard point and shoot (and if it's a holiday photo it'll likely be during the day so no major issues focusing). However if your budget is a bit flexible (I'm probably making as assumption given the average HN user) there are very solid high end point and shoots that are meant to fit in a pocket. I remember Sony made one perhaps 3-4 years back, I'm fairly certain other companies would have also made such products.
