learning a new language means you will learn two more new languages next year. eventually you will reach age 40 and be exhausted. i refused to learn new languages for many years and i’m doing ok. there is no need to learn new languages. specializing is a valid option. your post illustrates how only learning python or java or similar languages that hide complexity can make you ignorant of the machine and the reality you are dealing with. i believe anyone should learn C and know how to use pointers.
- gumby 5y agoWhy bother with C? Use the assembly language and then hop back up to a high level language like modern C++ (14 at least, 17 or 20 preferred) that let you stay very high level but pop down to hardware manipulation as necessary.
- b20000 5y agowith C++ it is easier to shoot yourself in the foot if you use modern features and/or the STL
- gumby 5y agoI don't understand your comment; is a word missing? Nowadays the old STL has been subsumed with a standard library (for quite a long time) and it has a lot of pretty safe functionality. That functionality tends to be only optimized for the common cases -- say a couple of sigma out -- so you can roll your own alongside it. And a lot of the pointer manipulation inherited from C is unnecessary given things like range based for. So what were you referring to?
