There's so much money in cancer research - when I was a pharmacology/genetics researcher I was told to try to tie everything back to cancer for research papers and grant proposals. And the oncology lab next door had the best equipment. We always had to borrow their stuff. Idk maybe this is a good argument against private charity. Not to say that cancer research isn't important but from what I could tell, cancer researchers had an embarrassment of riches.
