Open source games for MS-DOS
- emteycz 5y agoI recommend to explore this website: https://mircosoft.mzf.cz https://mircosoft.mzf.cz It's in Czech but Google Translate should work well enough. It's a oldschool Pascal/DOS hacker's website (he's a mainframe programmer profesionally), tons of Pascal programs, units, games, tutorials... There is also a copy of the Int21h magazine (also in Czech), a indie online magazine of Pascal/Assembly/DOS programmers, most active cca in 2005. This guy rolled his own graphics toolkit and made applications such as mathematician's notepad with freewriting (write where your mouse cursor is), etc. Of course, the mouse support and so on is his code too. He basically made his own entire stack (well except the BIOS/DOS core).
- myth_drannon 5y agoUnits! I completely forgot this term.
- emteycz 5y agoScreenshots (all of this runs on DOS+his Pascal stack): Notepad: https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/turbopad.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/turbopad.gif Plotting charts editor: https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/grafak-2D.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/grafak-2D.gif 3D charts: https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/grafak-3D.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/grafak-3D.gif Vector graphics editor: https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/acad.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/acad.gif Font editor: https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/pgfe1.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/pgfe1.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/pgfe2.gif https://mircosoft.mzf.cz/obrazky/pgfe2.gif

- unnouinceput 5y agoTurbo Pascal, Turbo C++ and Turbo Assembler. Back then Borland had the most advanced IDE's. Can you imagine a world where Borland was still king? No more Microsoft, no more Apple, no more Google as all developers would flock to Borland's tools only. Need that time machine, I want to go to a Universe where this is the norm.
- emteycz 5y agoTo be fair, Borland was built on the success of Microsoft - DOS as well as Windows.
- unnouinceput 5y agoHard disagree. Borland was successful before Microsoft's DOS was mainstream. They had their Turbo "everything" in 80's when DOS was struggling to kill DR, their direct competitor at the time. What you remember is probably Turbo 7.0, which was the most used of their products and that was in 90's when Microsoft was king now for IMB compatible OS. As for Windows, let's not forget that Microsoft had to kill OS/2 first and even after that, they had a full decade before XP unified gaming and NT under one roof. Up to that point you'd dual boot a W98 for gaming and a (W2K or W3.51)/NT for business
- emteycz 5y agoOK, you're probably right. This is my post-facto impression only. It's true Borland would be able to produce the same software for other dominant platforms too.
- benibela 5y agoI need that time machine, too It is the only way to make my 20 years of Delphi/FPC experience relevant for anything

- geon 5y agoNot really open source, but the source is available for pinball fantasies.
