Go 1.18 compile time may be about 18% slower than Go.17 (generics)
- dataangel 5y agoThis reminds me of conservatives saying government can't work and then turning it into self fulfilling prophecy. If the compiler is slower even when generics aren't being used then they screwed up their implementation Or the compiler being implemented in Go prevents having an efficient implementation...
- paskozdilar 5y agoConsidering that C++ templates can run arbitrarty computation during code template instantiation (making the "slower" factor potentially unlimited), I think constant time 18‰ slower compilation is pretty acceptable. My build times went from 7 secs to 8-9 secs. Also considering that the Go compiler has a history of getting better and faster (and harder and stronger :-) with each version, I am personally quite satisfied with Go1.18.
