Enjoy My Flames: On heavy metal’s fascination with Roman emperors
- cadr 5y agoI mean, according to https://www.metal-archives.com/stats https://www.metal-archives.com/stats, they have 3265646 total songs listed, so having a few hundred about an empire that lasted hundreds of years doesn't really feel like a "fascination".
- DoItToMe81 5y agoOnly about fifty bands on the list make Rome a key lyrical focus, too. I've listened to metal since I was a kid, and I can count the Rome related songs on one hand. I'd wager there are more songs about Jesus, for or against, than any emperor.

- turndown 5y agoI had hoped to see one of my favorite recent finds regarding this exact subject mentioned in this article, but I guess not! So here’s a song from a concept album about Basil II the Bulgar Slayer[0] by Judicator. 0: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyjXRSQHR-Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyjXRSQHR-Y
- vba616 5y agoEverybody is fascinated with Rome. Look around DC and notice how many fasces there are on monuments and stuff. For example, the statue of Lincoln in the Lincoln memorial is resting its arms on Roman fasces. "it is present on the reverse of the U.S. Mercury dime coin and behind the podium in the United States House of Representatives" "In the Oval Office, above the door leading to the exterior walkway, and above the corresponding door on the opposite wall, which leads to the president's private office" "The official seal of the United States Senate has as one component a pair of crossed fasces" "Fasces ring the base of the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol building" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasces https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasces
