The farmers facing ruin in America’s ‘forever chemicals’ crisis
- sebmellen 5y agoThis may be the most terrifying article I’ve read in the past year, and that’s saying something. Could it be we have all been eating PFAS-infested food for a long time now?
- jelliclesfarm 5y agoIt’s not just food grown but lurking everywhere from non stick pans, aluminum foil and bakery wrappers have been tested for PFAS. [..] Research has found that PFAS might also be in my dental floss, waterproof boots, umbrella, mattress pad, bike chain lube, cellphone, clothing, camping gear and more. They’re used in a range of personal care products from moisturizer to bar soap to cosmetics by a number of brands. Meanwhile, my couch and carpet may have been treated with Scotchgard or other stain guards that use PFAS to make products stain resistant.[..] https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/23/pfas-testing-forever-chemicals-household-water-cat https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/23/pfas-testing... One report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) found PFAS in the blood of 97% of Americans.1 A more recent NHANES report suggested a reduction in blood levels of PFOS and PFOA since their removal from consumer products in the early 2000s. However, the number of new PFAS chemicals appear to be increasing, and exposure is difficult to assess. https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/pfc/index.cfm#footnote1 https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/pfc/index.cfm...
