> Putin has settled it for the time being by providing Washington with its fondest wish: a Europe so subservient that an Italian university tried to ban a series of lectures on Dostoyevsky, to take just one of many egregious examples of how Europeans are making fools of themselves.
Whether it be Chomsky or Mearsheimer or any number of other public contrarians, it seems to be impossible for any of Putin's friends here in the West to imagine that people in Europe do actually have thoughts, goals, outrage and fears of their own.
Eastern Europe didn't want to join NATO despite a century of Russian abuse. The USA dragged them in.
Italy couldn't fear war in Europe or be outraged on its own. It must be that the USA told them to be that way.
- nikolay 5y agoFor example, Bulgaria didn't want in NATO and our corrupt politicians dragged us into it without a referendum. Till this day, most Bulgarians want out of NATO, but given when joining NATO all our Soviet-era weaponry was dismantled, if we're to leave now, we literally will have no means to protect ourselves. Our government prepaid a bunch of F-16s years ago, the US is way behind on their delivery! Basically, our arms were twisted to buy F-16s, not the European Gripens!
