The summer before I graduated with an engineering degree, I interned at a company near Green Bay, WI. The company made it a mission to get interns together to hang out, do activities, and even paid for happy hours. It was an amazing summer and even the most introverted of engineers was hanging with everyone.
Not only do I agree with you about eating lunch with your co-workers, but I also think companies should try and create engagements within the workplace as well. Most do this in cringy, inorganic ways, but if done properly, this can create a vibrant and exciting workplace.
*Side note, I went on to work for that company after graduating. Turns out they only really did those things for interns. I hated my job and quit 6 months in.
- mooreds 5y agoHow can you foster interactions that aren't cringe worthy? My best guess is to arrange activities that employees would do anyway and have the company sponsor them. $curjob took everyone downhill skiing for a day (we are mostly in CO, USA). I imagine there are similar types of activities available everywhere.
- cdykema 5y agoYa spot on. What they specifically did was have an intern group plan the events themselves, and we would be given a stipend that could cover anything from minor league baseball tickets to food and beer.
