I've encouraged friends with kids in high school to build a model around college expenses, loans, and what their kid's future career might pay them. It's terrible to be 22yo without good options in whatever you studied saddled with soul-crushing debt. I think public schools in a lot of the country are still very affordable if you're in the right fields; it's worth understanding cost/reward up front vs doing what most students and parents do and fly in blind thinking any degree will guarantee future prosperity.
