I quit software development in 2009 to switch into consulting with businesses on sustainability, once I found out how bad things were with respect to climate change, biodiversity loss, etc. After 4 years of consulting I realised I was never going to change the world working only with large companies one by one that could afford high daily rates, so I set up FutureFitBusiness.org - a non-profit dedicated to translating systems science into practical guidance for companies and investors to understand what ‘true’ sustainability means (i.e. reaching a range of science-based thresholds, and not just being slightly less bad than peers) and gives them the means to steer and assess progress toward it. I went back to my software roots in terms of our model: everything we publish is under a Creative Commons license, free for anyone to use, plus we have a partner program for advisors who want to be officially recognised as knowing how to help companies get the best out of our methodology. So we’re open sourcing sustainability!
