55db is not quiet -- that would be the loudest thing in my house. But shouldn't these things be in a basement or utility room?

  It is comparable to a refrigerator or dishwasher running. The pumps have to be outside the house. I can't hear mine though a double-glazed window.

    Good fridges are about 35db when running.
