Some kid is going to stand up and say: “You can throw me in jail or cancel my degree but I’m not paying my student debt… who’s with me?” And then the whole house of cards that is higher education collapses.
- beaned 5y agoSomeone currently in college told me that if you just don't pay them, they simply start forgiving then. Unofficially. I don't know how true that is.
- gunfighthacksaw 5y agoI pay the bare minimum payment and let inflation forgive them ;)
- 015UUZn8aEvW 5y agoNo, because the debt is owed to the government or to private lenders. Once the money is issued from the lender to the school for tuition, the school has no further exposure to any risk. Total scam.
- mistrial9 5y agomy first wife was older than me, and she never paid her student loans. She never had credit of any substance for the rest of her life (this was long ago and I know this is true).
- kube-system 5y agoAbout 1 million people do that every year in the US. None of them are thrown in jail or have their degrees cancelled. Those working in finance are well aware of the concept of a default. https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedman/2018/10/01/student-loans-default/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedman/2018/10/01/student...
- MisterBastahrd 5y agoLet me translate that for you: "I'm not as special as I thought I was and I was too lazy to figure out whether I could pay back what I borrowed even though I had the entire freaking internet to look that up for myself, so I'm going to throw a big fit." Nobody cares. Pay your debts or don't, but it's not going to change anything. That's not even civil disobedience. That's just entitlement. I'm sure that'll work out great when they need to buy a house, or a car, or get a loan if they need to pay for extra medical expenses. The entire system is an abusive racket, but let's not pretend that people don't have options.
