For most of my career people have been marveling about the way stuff just breaks around me. Ever since Netflix announced "chaos monkey", I've been nicknamed as that by co-workers. In the early days of the org I'm on, pre-public launch, they'd routinely ask us to sit down and carry out a specific set of actions using the product. 15 of us would sit down, click the specific buttons in the same order, and 14 would succeed. I'd find the weird edge case. Over and over again.
It's even more bizarre during my on-call shifts, when stuff I have absolutely zero involvement with breaks in bizarre and random ways that ends up having an outsized impact on the services I'm responsible for. Like, stuff I've zero ownership, zero communication with the team that owns it, no code, nothing, breaks when I'm on-call. It's so bizarre, and pronounced, at one stage you could actually see it in metrics, an $x week spike that correlates with my time on-call.
